03Employee State Insurance Corporation or ESIC is self-financing social security and medical insurance scheme that provides medical benefits, retirement coverage, unemployment benefits, maternity benefits, disability benefits and various other benefits such as funeral costs, free supply of physical aids, etc. to employees and their families.ESI is an independent body under the Government of India’s Ministry of Labour and Employment. Employee State Insurance (ESI) is a social security and health insurance program for Indian employees.
Factory or Establishments with 10 or more workers drawing up a salary of up to Rs.15,000 a month are required to be enrolled with ESIC under the 1948 ESI Act. The benefits offered by the scheme are financed with the contribution provided by the employees and employers. This contribution is collected in the way of premiums at a fixed rate from the salaries of the employees and employers. At present, covered employees owe 1.75 percent of the salary to the ESIC and employers owe 4.75 percent of the salaries paid to their employees. The state government also pays 1/8th share of medical care expenses.

Medical Benefit
Individuals enrolled under ESI and their family members are provided with full medical coverage-from the day the person is employed. There is no limit on an insured person or his / her family member’s medical care expenses. Health insurance is often given after payment of a nominal annual fee of Rs.120/- to elderly and permanently disabled insured persons and their spouses.
Maternity Benefit
Pregnant ladies have the right to maternity benefits payable for up to twenty-six weeks. Upon medical advice, this time can be extended by 30 days. In order to apply for maternity care, workers must pay their earnings for 70 days in the two previous years of contributions.
Disablement Benefit
As long as temporary illness remains, 90 percent of the income is payable from the day of entry into employment and regardless of having made any contribution. In the case of permanent disability based on the extent of lack of earning capacity as approved by a Medical Board, permanent disability compensation is available at a rate of 90 percent of salary in the form of the monthly payment.
Sickness Benefit
The employee will get sick benefits in the form of cash. The insured employee will be provided with cash compensation at the rate of 70% of there salaries for the maximum period of 91 days in a year. The insured worker is expected to spend 78 days over a payment period of 6 months to apply for the sickness payout. Workers suffering from malignant and long-term diseases will demand extended disability compensation at an elevated rate of 80 percent of earnings for up to two years.
Dependant Benefit
The dependent benefit is paid at a rate of 90 percent of salary in the form of monthly payout to a deceased covered person’s dependents, in situations where mortality is caused by work injuries or workplace hazards.
Funeral Expenses
A sum of Rs.10,000/- is payable to dependents or the individual performing the last rituals from day one of entering insurable employment.
Old age medical care
The annual Rs.120 premium guarantees medical insurance coverage to eligible ESI workers or to those who apply for VRS / ERS. Insured ESI holders who retire due to lifelong disabilities will enjoy the same welfare benefits.
Physical rehabilitation
Applicable in the event of physical disabilities related to workplace injuries or workplace risks of employees.
Unemployment Allowance
Under the Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana, unemployment compensation is payable to an eligible person who is unemployed after three or more years of insurance, due to factory/establishment shutdown, retrenchment or permanent disability. The unemployment allowances which are available are:
