Types of FSSAI license
According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 every business related to food business has to acquire an FSSAI license. The license is classified into 3 types.
FSSAI Basic Registration
Basic FSSAI registration is required for micro and petty food business houses. If the food business house matches the below criteria he can opt for basic registration.
- A small business house with less than 12 Lakh turnover
- A producer or seller of any food product by himself or small retailer, hawker, tea stall, juice stall, vendors or a sweets stall.
- A person selling packaged or providing freshly prepared food by moveable cart or from one location to another.
Small food business houses are required to get an FSSAI basic registration by presenting an application “Form A”. Once the FSSAI registration application is submitted, the authority will check the application and approve or reject within 7 working days.
State FSSAI License
State FSSAI license is required for medium food business houses. If the food business house matches the below criteria he can opt for State FSSAI license.
- A supplier whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- A distributor whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- A wholesaler whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year
- A food product transporter whose turnover is up to 20 crores per year and up to 100 vehicles
- A diary processing unit with a processing capacity of 500 liters of milk per day.
- An oil processing unit whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year
- A slaughterhouse processing more than 11 small animals or 3 larger animals or 50 poultry birds.
- A meat processing unit with a processing capacity of 500kg of meat per day.
- A Food producer or manufacturer or processing unit whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- A Cold storage unit whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- A Storage or packaging unit whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- A hotel providing services like lodging, food and other guest services
- Restaurants and bars whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year
- A Club/Canteen whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- Caterers whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
- Food product marketers whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year
Food retailers whose turnover is more than Rs.12 lakhs per year and up to 20 crores per year.
Central FSSAI license
A Central FSSAI license is required for large or huge food business houses. If the food business house matches the below criteria he can opt for a Central FSSAI license.
- A food business that operates in two or more states.
- A business deals with food product import.
- A business deals with food product export.
- A food business which is carried out in Airport or Seaport
- A food business, which is carried out in Railway Stations.
- A business house which is selling their food products through e-commerce.
- A five-star hotel.
- A food business which is carried out within the premises belonging to Central Government Agencies
- A supplier whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.
- A distributor whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year
- A wholesaler whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year
- A food product transporter whose turnover is up to 200 crores per year and has more than 100 vehicles
- A diary processing unit with a processing capacity of 50,000 liters of milk per day
- An oil processing unit whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.
- A Food producer or manufacturer or processing unit whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.
- A Cold storage unit whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year
- A Storage or packaging unit whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.
- Restaurants and bars whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.
- A Club/Canteen whose turnover is more than up to 20 crores per year.
- Caterers whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.
- Food product marketers whose turnover is more than 20 crores per year.

Documents Required for the FSSAI
The documents required for procuring FSSAI license depends on the type of FSSAI license and type of business entity. Below are the documents required depending upon the type of license:
FSSAI Basic Registration

If the application is submitted after the expiry date there will be a fine 100Rs per day from the expiry date.
